Registration Statement: The Dodge-Snyder Police Department consists of three Officers. We share an agency with two different towns approximately 6 miles apart. We are on US Hwy 91 and we have several contacts and answer ALL calls for service, such as, shots fired, domestics, drunk drivers, assaults, etc.
Why has your department decided to start a body camera program?
Chief Deemer: Our Department has decided to use body cameras not only for officer safety but for the safety of the community and to have evidence readily available for court testimony.
How do you believe a body camera program will benefit your officers, department and the community?
Chief Deemer: I believe body cameras would be a valuable asset to the agency and to the officers for evidence collection.
Are there any situations where having body camera video evidence would have made a difference in court cases or complaints against your officers?
Chief Deemer: We have had incidents where an officer was sued, had we had the body camera, there would have been no question as to the validity of statements made during the incident.
Does your department have guidelines for a body camera policy? If so, what would the policy be? When would officers be required to record, etc.?
Chief Deemer: Our Department is putting together guidelines for the use of body cameras.
