Why has your department decided to start a body camera program?
Officer McElfresh: Our department currently does not have body cameras, but we would like to start using them. I have used body cameras with other agencies and know the benefits and downfalls of them. We believe the benefits out weigh the cons.
How do you believe a body camera program will benefit your officers, department and the community?
Officer McElfresh: Benefits for our officers; will be better case reports, which will translate into more convictions. It will also help our officers when it comes to complaints against them and what the real truth is to situation. The community will benefit in the same ways, as well as, it will hold our officers to a higher standard when interacting with the community.
Are there any situations where having body camera video evidence would have made a difference in court cases or complaints against your officers?
Officer McElfresh: There are always situations where body camera footage would have made a difference. They are really more then I could tell you about.
Does your department have guidelines for a body camera policy? If so, what would the policy be? When would officers be required to record, etc.?
Officer McElfresh: We currently do not have a body camera policy/guideline. If body cameras are obtained we will look at the policy/procedures from surrounding agencies and put one together that best fits our department.
