Why has your department decided to start a body camera program?
Chief Joly: Body Cameras are the just the way things are going for police departments across the country. We want to get body cameras for the safety of our officers and for our officers to be able to record their actions.

How do you believe a body camera program will benefit your officers, department and the community?
Chief Joly: Mainly for officer safety and so we can review the video footage. For example, if we respond to a crime scene or car wreckage site and then need to testify about it months later in court, we can review the officer’s body camera footage to remember important details. You’re not going to remember everything unless you write it down. Having the video evidence will help our officers remember and verify facts in these situations.

Does your department have guidelines for a body camera policy? If so, what would the policy be? When would officers be required to record, etc.?
Chief Joly: We don’t have one currently because we don’t have body cameras. When we get them we’ll write up a body camera policy.
