Why has your department decided to start a body camera program?
Officer Edwards: We always wanted to get body cameras but it’s an item that has fallen short on our budget item list. We just don’t have the funding to get body cameras.

How do you believe a body camera program will benefit your officers, department and the community?
Officer Edwards: Body Cameras would cut down on complaints. One of our neighboring departments started using body cameras and complaints dropped by 75%. Many times people don’t realize how serious it is to make false complaints against an officer. Body cameras will help reduce those a lot.

Are there any situations where having body camera video evidence would have made a difference in court cases or complaints against your officers?
Officer Edwards: Right now we can use them for every traffic stop we make and every interaction with the public.

Does your department have guidelines for a body camera policy? If so, what would the policy be? When would officers be required to record, etc.?
Officer Edwards: We’re working on putting one in place right now. One of our biggest concern is following chain of custody rules for the body cameras.
