Why has your department decided to start a body camera program?
Chief Bennett: Right now we don’t have any cameras. We want to get body cameras for court purposes, for officer safety and to keep complaints down. With a body camera, everything is being recorded.
How do you believe a body camera program will benefit your officers, department and the community?
Chief Bennett: Body cameras will help our officers do their job because if everyone knows they’re being recorded people won’t be as quick to be disorderly or not follow an officers commands.
Are there any situations where having body camera video evidence would have made a difference in court cases or complaints against your officers?
Chief Bennett: Hypothetically a body camera would be helpful in cases where officers are accused of being rude or using unnecessary physical force.
Does your department have guidelines for a body camera policy? If so, what would the policy be? When would officers be required to record, etc.?
Chief Bennett: Our policy would be that the cameras need to be activated on every call.
